Peace4Kids
This program covers employment, housing, and money management for foster youth and other at-risk youth from the South Los Angeles area. Their focus is to encourage each teen to develop dreams and goals for their own future. Youth will learn how to look for a job, write a resume, fill out applications, and what to expect, including how to act, in a job interview. They will also learn how to find an apartment, what is important to look for in an apartment and/or roommate, and what the responsibilities are when signing a lease. Finally, they will learn the many aspects of managing their money including budgeting, saving, banking, planning ahead, and tips for saving when shopping.
Street
Poets
Street Poets is a non-profit poetry-based
peace-making organization dedicated to the creative process as
a force for individual and community transformation. Their mission
is:
TO INSPIRE at-risk youth in the juvenile detention facilities, schools
and streets of Los Angeles County to discover and develop their voices
as writers, artists and human beings;
TO EMPOWER these young people to use the skills and increased self-awareness
engendered through the arts to transcend self-destructive lifestyles;
TO CREATE a healing community that unites different racial, ethnic
and socioeconomic segments of the city around the transformational
power of the creative process.
Street Poets holds weekly workshops at their office (Seeking Peace,
Tuesdays 4-6 p.m. and Studio Recording Sessions, Fridays 4-8
p.m.), probation camps and at public and alternative high schools in Los Angeles. In
the last three years, they've produced 3 CDs of music and poetry by our youth. You
can download tracks from these CDs on their website.
